The Mississippi Center for Innovation & Technology (MCITy) Project located in Vicksburg, MS overlooking the Mississippi River, was a historic rehabilitation of the Mississippi Hardware Building, a 3-story, 51,000 square foot building. The Mississippi Hardware Building was originally constructed in 1935 and has been transformed into a multifaceted entrepreneurial center focused on workforce development in the innovative sciences.
The historical renovations consisted of 3 phases around $15M in total cost and involved completely waterproofing the exterior of the building and restoring the existing building openings, and demolition of all existing interiors, while applying a historically compliant insulated window film to every pane of glass around the exterior of the building. Second came the replacement of all major building function systems, including new Electrical Services and Major Mechanical HVAC equipment. All building parking lots were completely re-designed and retaining walls were added to hold back the extremely challenging site conditions that had eroded over time yet allowed for a new artistic landscaping package to be achieved. Finally, the complete restoration of the gorgeous wood floors, combining new materials with existing materials to form a flooring product unrivalled in any other commercial project. Furthermore, complete interior Tenant Improvement build out packages were completed for ERDCWERX, The Vicksburg Chamber, Hinds Community College, Mississippi State University, and Alcorn State University, as well as a Café’ for building users to enjoy. The project was completed over a 3-year duration including phased design activities performed by Van Meter, Williams, Pollack LLP based out of California. MCITy was an overwhelming success for the community and all involved.
